Dear fellow believer did you know that four out of ten people suffer from depression?

We need the Lord and especially His comfort more than ever.

We are now going to look at Bible verses to comfort depression and fear.

"God's comfort is as certain as His Word, as reliable as His character, as assuring as His love, as assuring as His love, as affirming as His goodness, as abundant as His grace, as complete as His mercies, and as dependable as His faithfulness." - Roy Lessin

AKJV - American King James Version
ASV - American Standard Version (1901)
BBE - Bible in Basic English (1949/1964)
GW - GOD'S WORD Translation

Proverbs 15:13:

AKJV A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
ASV A glad heart maketh a cheerful countenance; But by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.
GW A joyful heart makes a cheerful face, but with a heartache comes depression.

Proverbs 17:22:

AKJV A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones.
BBE A glad heart makes a healthy body, but a crushed spirit makes the bones dry.
GW A joyful heart is good medicine, but depression drains one's strength.

Psalms 71:19-21:

ASV Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high; Thou who hast done great things, O God, who is like unto thee? Thou, who hast showed us many and sore troubles, Wilt quicken us again, And wilt bring us up again from the depths of the earth. Increase thou my greatness, And turn again and comfort me.
BBE Your righteousness, O God, is very high; you have done great things; O God, who is like you? You, who have sent great and bitter troubles on me, will give me life again, lifting me up from the deep waters of the underworld. You will make me greater than before, and give me comfort on every side.
GW Your righteousness reaches to the heavens, O God. You have done great things. O God, who is like you? You have made me endure many terrible troubles. You restore me to life again. You bring me back from the depths of the earth. You comfort me and make me greater than ever.

Psalms 119:50:

ASV This is my comfort in my affliction; For thy word hath quickened me.
BBE This is my comfort in my trouble; that your sayings have given me life.
GW This is my comfort in my misery: Your promise gave me a new life.

ASV This is my comfort in my affliction; For thy word hath quickened me.
BBE This is my comfort in my trouble; that your sayings have given me life.
GW This is my comfort in my misery: Your promise gave me a new life.

Isaiah 51:12:

AKJV I, even I, am he that comforts you: who are you, that you should be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;
BBE I, even I, am your comforter: are you so poor in heart as to be in fear of man who will come to an end, and of the son of man who will be like grass?
GW I alone am the one who comforts you. Why, then, are you afraid of mortals, who must die, of humans, who are like grass

Isaiah 52:9:

ASV Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for Jehovah hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.
BBE Give sounds of joy, make melody together, waste places of Jerusalem: for the Lord has given comfort to his people, he has taken up the cause of Jerusalem.
GW Break out into shouts of joy, ruins of Jerusalem. The LORD will comfort his people. He will reclaim Jerusalem.

II Corinthians 1:3-4:

AKJV Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted of God.
BBE Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort; Who gives us comfort in all our troubles, so that we may be able to give comfort to others who are in trouble, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
GW Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He is the Father who is compassionate and the God who gives comfort. He comforts us whenever we suffer. That is why whenever other people suffer, we are able to comfort them by using the same comfort we have received from God.

II Corinthians 1:6:

ASV But whether we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or whether we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which worketh in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer:
BBE But if we are troubled, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which takes effect through your quiet undergoing of the same troubles which we undergo:
GW Besides, if we suffer, it brings you comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, we can effectively comfort you when you endure the same sufferings that we endure.

II Timothy 1:7:

AKJV For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
BBE For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of self-control.
GW God didn't give us a cowardly spirit but a spirit of power, love, and good judgment.

Looking at these verses we see that God intended joy for us not depression. He wants to comfort us in His love. One thing I have learned over the years is that when I'm fearful or depressed - I praise the Lord. Praising the Lord calms my spirit and helps me to focus on Christ and not on myself and my problem.

I leave you with the words of Psalms 55:22:

Turn your burdens over to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will never let the righteous person stumble.
