Dear fellow believer. We are now going to look at Bible verses for a friend. Do you wonder what God says about friends and friendship? What must we look for in a friend or what should we be careful of in a friend? Can we be a friend of God?

AKJV - American King James Version
BBE - Bible in Basic English (1949/1964)
GW - GOD'S WORD Translation
AMP - Amplified Bible

Proverbs 17:17:

AKJV A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
BBE A friend is loving at all times, and becomes a brother in times of trouble.
GW A friend always loves, and a brother is born to share trouble.
AMP A friend loves at all times, and is born, as is a brother, for adversity.

Proverbs 18:24:

AKJV A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
BBE There are friends who may be a man's destruction, but there is a lover who keeps nearer than a brother.
GW Friends can destroy one another, but a loving friend can stick closer than family.
AMP The man of many friends [a friend of all the world] will prove himself a bad friend, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Proverbs 22:11:

AKJV He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.
BBE He whose heart is clean is dear to the Lord; for the grace of his lips the king will be his friend.
GW Whoever loves a pure heart and whoever speaks graciously has a king as his friend.
AMP He who loves purity {and} the pure in heart {and} who is gracious in speech--because of the grace of his lips will he have the king for his friend.

Proverbs 27:6:

AKJV Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
BBE The wounds of a friend are given in good faith, but the kisses of a hater are false.
GW Wounds made by a friend are intended to help, but an enemy's kisses are too much to bear.
AMP Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are lavish {and} deceitful.

Proverbs 27:9:

AKJV Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man' friend by hearty counsel.
BBE Oil and perfume make glad the heart, and the wise suggestion of a friend is sweet to the soul.
GW Perfume and incense make the heart glad, but the sweetness of a friend is a fragrant forest.
AMP Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; so does the sweetness of a friend's counsel that comes from the heart.

Proverbs 19:4:

AKJV Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.
BBE Wealth makes a great number of friends; but the poor man is parted from his friend.
GW Wealth adds many friends, but a poor person is separated from his friend.
AMP Wealth makes many friends, but the poor man is avoided by his neighbor.

Proverbs 22:24:

AKJV Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:
BBE Do not be friends with a man who is given to wrath; do not go in the company of an angry man:
GW Do not be a friend of one who has a bad temper, and never keep company with a hothead,
AMP Make no friendships with a man given to anger, and with a wrathful man do not associate,

John 15:13:

AKJV "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
BBE Greater love has no man than this, that a man gives up his life for his friends.
GW The greatest love you can show is to give your life for your friends.
AMP No one has greater love [no one has shown stronger affection] than to lay down (give up) his own life for his friends.

John 15:14:

AKJV "Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you."
BBE You are my friends, if you do what I give you orders to do.
GW You are my friends if you obey my commandments.
AMP You are My friends if you keep on doing the things which I command you to do.

John 15:15:

AKJV "Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you."
BBE No longer do I give you the name of servants; because a servant is without knowledge of what his master is doing: I give you the name of friends, because I have given you knowledge of all the things which my Father has said to me.
GW I don't call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn't know what his master is doing. But I've called you friends because I've made known to you everything that I've heard from my Father.
AMP I do not call you servants (slaves) any longer, for the servant does not know what his master is doing (working out). But I have called you My friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from My Father. [I have revealed to you everything that I have learned from Him.]

Clearly we can see that God made friendship with a purpose. We can see what God means by friendship and what a friend is suppose to be like. We can see that we all need friends. And when we look at Jesus Christ (He is the ultimate example). He calls us His friends. He gave His life for us His friends, so that we can receive eternal life. He has risen from the dead and like a good friend He is always there for us. May God give you a friend you can depend on and His friendship you can rely on.
